How an Ohio paycheck is taxed
| Tax | How it is figured |
|---|---|
| Federal income tax | IRS 2026 withholding tables, based on your W-4. 401(k) and health premiums come out first. |
| Social Security | 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 a year. 401(k) contributions are still taxed. |
| Medicare | 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% on wages above $200,000. |
| Ohio income tax | Ohio's withholding formula: 1.6% of the first $26,050 of taxable wages, then 2.99% up to $100,000 and 3.4% above, after $650 per IT 4 exemption. |
| City income tax | Your work city's rate (median 1.5%) on Medicare wages, so a 401(k) does not lower it. |
| School district tax | Your home district's rate, if it has one. Some districts tax earned income only. |
Why many Ohio workers get a state refund
Ohio's 2026 income tax is 0% on the first $26,050 of taxable income and 2.75% above that. The withholding formula employers use takes more, starting at 1.6% from the first dollar. That gap usually comes back to you as a refund when you file your Ohio return. This calculator shows what is withheld from each paycheck, because that is what your pay stub will show.
