Philadelphia, Pennsylvania paycheck calculator

Philadelphia residents pay the 3.735% Wage Tax on all their wages, wherever they work. People who work in the city but live elsewhere pay 3.425%. Unlike the rest of Pennsylvania, 401(k) contributions and health premiums do not reduce it. On a $60,000 salary a resident pays $2,241.00 a year.

Commuting into or out of Philadelphia

If you live in Philadelphia and work in the suburbs, your employer still withholds the 3.735% resident Wage Tax, and you pay the local services tax of the place you work. If you live outside the city and work in Philadelphia, your employer withholds the 3.425% non-resident Wage Tax instead of your home earned income tax. Your home municipality credits it, so you usually owe nothing more there unless your home rate is higher.

Why a 401(k) saves less tax in Pennsylvania

401(k) contributions lower your federal income tax, but Pennsylvania taxes them: the 3.07% state tax and the Philadelphia Wage Tax still apply to the money you put in. Health premiums taken out under a Section 125 plan lower your state tax but not the Wage Tax.
